What's the difference between Cat5e and Cat6a?
Cat5e has been the industry standard for many years and is still a viable option today. Cat5e is rated for 1000 Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet) up to 100 meters. Cat6a cables provide lower crosstalk, a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and are suitable for 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet). However, most network equipment currently in use in SMBs only supports up to 1-Gbps speeds. So, upgrading your wiring without upgrading your network infrastructure would not result in a noticeable speed difference.
As a means of future-proofing your network, Cat6a is a good choice and may be worth the small premium in price. Cat5e and Cat6a cables are both backward-compatible, which means newer Cat6a cables can be used with older Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5, and even Cat3 equipment.
